Nice surprise to see Grant at Largo tonight.  He performed a new song at the Watkins Family show, probably called Fools' Gold or something like that.   I liked it a lot - very pretty.  He also joined everyone for a funky version of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and then Go Tell it on the Mountain.  Fun show, lots of great guests and Christmas cheer!

The Watkins' usually put up a podcast of their shows, and they did appear to be recording this one, so when it's available I'll post it for anyone who would like to hear the new song.

If you go to http://seanwatkins.com/category/podcast/ you can listen to the older podcast #1 to hold you over, with Grant starting at about 6 minutes in with some funny stuff, and a Carter Family song.  Enjoy!

  • Here's a picture of all the fantastic people in the Watkins Christmas show at Largo, snagged off Sara Watkins' facebook:

That's the great Benmont Tench seated in front of the piano, and Grant is 2 people over to the right from him hiding in the back as usual. :)

  • Lovely photo. That would have been a fun gig. Benmont Tench is always a treat. I think Sebastian Steinberg played at the run of gigs Neil Finn did in NZ in 2001 with a host of others (including Johnny Greenwood of Radiohead and Our Boy Ed Vedder of Pearl Jam) that resulted in the quite wonderful 'Seven Worlds Collide' live album and DVD. LAGirl, if you dig the Finn Bros. (and i think you do), you really must get 'Seven Worlds Collide' on DVD.
Grant-Lee Phillips shows: 8 since 2002 and counting!
Grant Lee Buffalo shows: May 17 (Dublin) and May 18 (London) 2011.

  • Yes, I do dig the Finn Bros.  I don't have the DVD but I do have the CD. Neil Finn ranks as my #2 best show ever at Largo, just behind GLB.

Benmont and Sebastian play at all of the Watkins family shows at Largo.  They are both amazing musicians and always fun to see!
